To introduce the concept of COMPACT goals and planning and target
setting towards high school within the classroom situation in the
first instance and ultimately with the intervention and support of
a mentor A small number of pupils are identified and the mentors are
selected according to the needs of the pupils. The mentor then works
with the children for one lesson a week in the classroom for a two
week familiarisation period The notion of goals is then explained
to the whole class and the children are given a card with daily targets.
If the children meet their targets they are given a stamp by the class
teacher Every week the individual pupils are rewarded by moving up
the staircase to highschool on a big picture on the classroom wall.
This is completed when the mentor is in with the mentored pupils to
encourage, praise set new targets and revise plans. Special achievement
is also rewarded on a special roll of honour The whole activity provides
a structured personal record to complement transition This activity
can be reinforced by the notion of reward ie visits to sports club,
in house prize-giving or visits to companies. |
